A “piece of Ciociaria” enters the Unesco Heritage List. The traditional “Cannata” Race of the Gonfalone di Arpino is inscribed in the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage Register. Together with the Race of Arpino, other popular Games included in the Tocatì, the international festival that brings together the Games and Races that once took place on the streets of ancient Italian and European cities, have also been recognised.

The ‘Cannata’ Race is a spectacular and unique game, the only one reserved for women only. The competitors must carry on their heads, without the help of their hands, an earthenware jar containing water, the “cannata” in fact. This is the symbol of the town of Arpino and the entire Ciociaria area. The game consists of running, with the ‘cioce’ on their feet, the typical footwear of Ciociaria shepherds, a distance of 280 metres with the ‘cannata’ placed on a cloth rolled up like a doughnut on their head.
This race is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited and original of the traditional games held during the Gonfalone di Arpino, the folkloristic event that sees the town’s districts and quarters compete against each other to win the Gonfalone. The 53rd edition will take place in 2024.
