The Gutenberg Bible on Display in Subiaco

The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Scolastica in Subiaco, the Italy’s Book Capital 2025, will host from March 20 to April 19, 2026, an extraordinary event. The Municipality of Subiaco and the State Library of the National Monument of Santa Scolastica have announced the exhibition of the Gutenberg Bible, the first major book printed in Europe with movable type. The precious and iconic book has been exceptionally loaned from the Vatican Apostolic Library.

Alongside this absolute masterpiece, one of the oldest and most precious copies of Marcus Tullius Cicero’s De Oratore will be on display, an extremely rare incunabulum from 1465 printed in Subiaco, now preserved at the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome. The work testifies to the birth of Italian typography in the Monastery of Santa Scolastica, which allowed the free and wider dissemination of knowledge.

The extraordinary exhibition will be inaugurated on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. and will be open to the public from March 21 until April 19, 2026, every day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For information on visiting hours and programme, please consult the official channels of the Municipality of Subiaco and the Biblioteca Statale del Monumento Nazionale di Santa Scolastica.
