Vacone, a small town of 267 inhabitants, is located about 90 km. from Rome.

Great poets, such as Orazio, Ovidio and Virgilio, have sung in verse the amenity of the area and lead us to the exploration of the different natural landscapes offered by this corner of Sabina.

The toponym Vacone derives from the cult of the Goddess Vacuna and from the fact that in these places there must have been a fanum vacunae, a temple dedicated to the goddess. The cult of Vacuna was widely followed in ancient Sabina and even Numa Pompilius, Sabine king of Rome, taught the Romans to respect his divinity.

According to the traditional interpretation, the goddess protects those who restore their physical health in the carefree leisure of the countryside.

From the Goddess derives the Latin word vacare, which means to rest from the torments and enjoy rest, tranquillity and pastimes.

Many remains from the Roman era have been found in the area, included the ruins of the Villa of Quinto Orazio Flacco, a Roman poet better known as Orazio, out.
