Vallemaio is located around 140 km from Rome. Situated on the northern foothills of Mount Maio, from which it takes its name, the village perches on a little hill at an altitude of  337 m.

Until 1332 it was named Vallefredda, given the extremely cold [fredda] climatic conditions.

Vallemaio was subject to considerable destruction up to the end of the Second World War, but the ferocity of the war spared the beautiful Church of the Annunziata, 16th century, which houses a triptych from that time, attributed to Martucci and the Church of Santa Rosaria, 15th century, the only exemplar of a Christian hanging cemetery in all Europe.

Various footpaths start from the village, allowing visitors to enjoy walks up to an altitude of 960 m.
