Filippo Lippi’s Madonna returns to Tarquinia

On the centenary of the “Museo Archeologico Nazionale Tarquiniense”, the Madonna painted by the Florentine artist Filippo Lippi in 1437 returns to Palazzo Vitelleschi in Tarquinia, where it will be on display from December 5, 2024, to March 4, 2025.

The masterpiece was commissioned by Giovanno Vitelleschi, Archbishop of Florence, who was born in Tarquinia. In 1437, Vitelleschi decided to return to his hometown, bringing Lippi’s altarpiece with him, and made a sumptuous palace built, which has been hosting, since 1924, the “ Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cerveteri e Tarquinia”.

The exhibition “1437. La Madonna di Filippo Lippi, Tarquinia e il Cardinale Vitelleschi” is spread in five different sites of Tarquinia: Palazzo Vitelleschi, the Cathedral, the Church of S. Maria in Castello, the Palazzetto di S. Spirito – Archivio Comunale, and the Sala degli Affreschi – Palazzo del Comune.

Visitors will also enjoy the unmissable opportunity to experience Tarquinia and its museum during the Christmas holidays and the Jubilee year.
