The Last Judgement in Rieti is once again visitable

From Friday, June 12, 2026, the extraordinary pictorial cycle of the Last Judgement in the Oratory of San Pietro Martire in Rieti will once again be accessible to residents and tourists after meticulous restoration works.

In 2026, Rieti was declared Italian Capital of Culture along with L’Aquila. The monumental masterpiece frescoed by the Veronese brothers Lorenzo and Bartolomeo Torresani between 1552 and 1554 has been brought to its original beauty with extraordinary intense colours.

The restoration could no longer be postponed due to the critical condition of the plaster and decorated surfaces, further aggravated by the earthquake of 2016. The initiative was promoted by the  Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio (SABAP), the Scuola Interforze per la Difesa NBC at the Caserma “Verdirosi”, and the Municipality of Rieti and directed by the art historian Giuseppe Cassio, and the project designer and operation manager Monica Sabatini from SABAP.
