If you are looking for the perfect destination to recharge with positive energy away from the city, take a trip to the Treja Valley and visit the Monte Gelato waterfalls, among woods and lush vegetation, a stone’s throw from Mazzano Romano.

Cascate Monte Gelato - Valle del Treja

You can choose among several excursions along the ancient tracks, among the ravines and the natural waterfalls formed by the Treja River, like the famous Cascate di  Monte Gelato.

Valle del Treja

This site exists since prehistoric times, as witnessed by the many traces, such as the remains of a Roman Villa from the first century BC. and an agricultural settlement from the 8th century AD, as well as a water mill built in the 19th century, which functioned until the 1960s. Other hints are the archaeological areas of Narce, with the ancient Faliscan sites, and Monte Li Santi.

Mazzano Romano

Do not miss a walk throughout the medieval village of Mazzano Romano, with its narrow streets, stairways, and alleys above a tuff spur, from where to enjoy a spectacular view.

We enter the village through an arch in the walls of the Biscia Baronial Palace. Here we find many buildings from different eras, such as the Baronial Palace of Everso and Dolce degli Anguillara from the 15th century. Do not forget a visit to the small Church of San Sebastiano, decorated with 16th century frescoes, depicting the martyrdom of San Sebastiano with San Rocco, San Gregorio Papa, the Madonna and Child and Sant’Anna.

Continuing up to the top of the village, you reach Piazza dell’Antisà, with the remains of the ancient Church of San Nicola, built in the 16th century according to o a project by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola and demolished in 1940 because dangerous.

The Treja Valley has often been a location for western movies of the past, commercials and fiction. A large part of “Destinazione Piovarolo“, the 1956 film with Totò in the role of a stationmaster, was filmed in Mazzano Romano.
