An Itinerary through the Flavours of new Olive Oils DOP

To travel is a discovery through the senses. Let us follow the trail of flavours in Lazio and taste the renowned DOP olive oils from the Sabina and the Tuscia Viterbese. Bring a slice of homemade bread with you, season it with a few drops of new olive oil, and be ready to enjoy your bruschetta!

Museo dell'Olio della Sabina a Castelnuovo di Farfa

The Museo dell’Olio della Sabina in Castelnuovo di Farfa

Our itinerary begins in the land of the ancient Sabines, in Fara Sabina, where we can taste the golden-green, fruit-flavoured extra virgin olive oil DOP, very light and with a low acidity. The importance of this renowned local product is testified by the Museo dell’Olio della Sabina in Castelnuovo di Farfa.

Olivone - Ulivo millenario

The thousand-year-old Olivone or “Gran Vecchio”

Worth a visit is Canneto Sabino, with its two thousand years old olive tree, nicknamed “Olivone” or “Gran Vecchio”, the largest one in Europe, with a trunk of approximately seven metres in diametre. The tree is located within a private property but can be visited.

Finally, do not forget to taste the delicious Frascarelli, a mixture of water and flour, topped with a tomato sauce and new olive oil.
If you prefer a stronger kind of oil, follow the Strada dell’Olio DOP di Canino, an historical route among olive trees of archaeological and cultural value. A visit to the olive groves and presses and a taste of bread and local specialities seasoned with this genuine product will allow you to experience the true essence of the villages dotting the Tuscia territory.

Ulivi a Vulci

The Strada dell’ Olio EVO DOP di Canino winds through the villages of Arlena di Castro, Canino, Cellere, Farnese, Ischia di Castro, Tessennano, Montalto di Castro, and Tuscania. Lovers of history will appreciate the Parco Naturalistico Archeologico di Vulci  and its necropolises, which host over ten thousand graves, including the famous Tomb of Francois.

Museo Archeologico di Vulci

The Museo Archeologico di Vulci

Not to be missed in Vulci are the Castello dell’Abbadia, with its evocative bridge, the Museo Archeologico di Vulci, which displays over five hundred catalogued vases, Castellardo, Musignano, and the Terme Apollinari, once known as the Cento Camere.

Before inhaling the aroma of freshly pressed olive oil, enjoy the immersive experience to observe the spectacle of the olive harvesting!
