Fossil cliffs, dinosaurs and outer space in Rocca di Cave

In the lovely village of Rocca di Cave, perched on a hill, we can experience an exciting excursion into the past on the trail of a dinosaur and discover the millenary history of this area.

In 2016, the skeleton of a dinosaur, later nicknamed Tito, was found in the territory of the Prenestini Mountains. This first Italian sauropod was therefore a confirmation that Italy had been inhabited by dinosaurs for a very long time.

In Rocca di Cave, we can admire the Regional Natural Monument of the Cretaceous Fossil Cliff and identify the phenomena that have shaped this karstic territory.

Along via Gennazzano, a geological-naturalistic itinerary of approximately 1.5 km still preserves remains of molluscs, sponges, and corals, that flourished in a tropical sea around one hundred million years ago.

Prenestine Mountains

An open-air exhibition, the natural extension of the Ardito Desio Geopaleontological Museum, was created within the walls of the 9th century fortress of Rocca Colonna. The spectacular view from the tower ranges from the Apennines to the Colli Albani, the Roman countryside and the Pontine plain.

Rocca di Cave

In the tower of Rocca Colonna, we can visit an astronomical observatory with both a stable and a mobile planetarium. Let us contemplate, with our nose in the air, the constellations in the different seasons, the Moon, the planets, and the galaxies. Finally, you will learn about the myths and traditions related to the observation of the celestial vault.

An unforgettable experience, to be personally lived!
