This year, 2026, Lazio has confirmed its ten child-friendly beaches awarded with the prestigious Green Flag. They have been chosen according to the following criteria: shallow, clean water near the shore, safe sand areas for children to play, lifeguards, space between umbrellas, services and catering facilities, and opportunities for parents to relax. The seaside resorts were evaluated by a jury of approximately 3,000 paediatricians.
Here are the ten beaches in Lazio that earned the Green Flags in 2026:
Montalto di Castro (Viterbo), Anzio (Rome), Lido di Latina (Latina), Sabaudia (Latina), San Felice Circeo (Latina), Terracina (Latina), Sperlonga (Latina), Gaeta (Latina), Formia (Latina), and Ventotene – Cala Nave (Latina).
The initiative was conceived by the paediatrician and university professor Italo Farnetani, now President of the International Workshop of Green Flags. Since 2017, it the prize has been extended to other European Union countries and, in 2021, to some African towns.
Montalto Marina
From Montalto di Castro, a beautiful medieval village perched on a tuff spur, it is possible to enjoy the awesome view of the sea and the Maremma Viterbese. Unmissable are the Guglielmi Castle, the Vulci Archaeological and Natural Park, and the Vulci Thermal Baths.
The Beach of Anzio
Anzio, the birthplace of Nero, is an elegant seaside resort renowned since Roman times, as witnessed by Nero’s Imperial Villa. It boasts the two wide beaches of Riviera di Levante and Riviera di Ponente. Worth visiting are the Tor Caldara Nature Reserve and the Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio.
Lido di Latina
The beach of Lido di Latina lies in a marine area within the Circeo National Park, which also hosts Lake Fogliano and the park of the same name. Here, children will be able to practice canoeing, admire migratory birds and buffalo herds, and taste the delicious local mozzarella.
The Beach of Sabaudia
Sabaudia immersed in the greenery of the Circeo National Park, boasts a long strip of white beach with undulating dunes dotted with flowers. Biking through the wild coastal landscape will be a unique experience.
The Beach of San Felice Circeo
San Felice Circeo is the land of the mythological sorceress Circe, whose profile can be seen against the promontory of the same name. The village not only hosts a beautiful white beach, but also a charming small historic centre with the Torre dei Templari and the small square, a perfect place for an evening aperitif.
The Beach of Terracina
Terracina has over seven km of coastline, including over two km of waterfront in the city centre. Here, it is possible to stroll or cycle along the bike paths running the length of the town, and to admire the Temple of Jupiter Anxur from below. A true paradise for lovers of water sports, it is the port of embarkation for the Pontine Islands.
Villa of Tiberius in Sperlonga
Sperlonga was a holiday resort even in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of the Villa and Grotto of Tiberius. The village stands on a rocky spur and overlooks the sea and its wide, white sandy beaches. The historic centre, with its narrow streets, squares and small shops, is the hub of social life.
The Beach of Serapo in Gaeta
Gaeta, with its wide, white beaches, is a magnificent blend of nature, history, tradition, and maritime art, all coexisting in the Medieval District. The spectacle can also be enjoyed from the sea with a boat trip along Gaeta’s seven beaches.
The Formia Coast
The town of Formia, a favourite holiday destination for ancient Romans during the Imperial Age, is rich in artistic, historical, and cultural heritage sites, including aqueducts, cisterns, villas, and tombs, such as the one of Cicero. Its coastline is ideal for children and enthusiasts of sailing, surfing, and windsurfing. Like Terracina, Formia is also a port of embarkation for the Pontine Islands.
Cala Nave a Ventotene
Ventotene “the island of the wind”, is rich in vegetation, nature, history, and breathtaking landscapes. The beach of Cala Nave captures the heart with its soft sand, seabed rich with colourful fauna, and small rocks emerging from the clear water. In the evening, tiny lights and the spectacle of the moon reflecting in the water lends the place a magical atmosphere. The island can be reached, at different times of the year, from Anzio, Formia, and Terracina.
