At 78 km from Rome stands the town of Tolfa, which boasts important historical and cultural roots. Today it is a thriving centre in terms of craft and commercial businesses but it also aims to boost tourism.

The hills that lead down to the sea are the pride and joy of this uncontaminated area, spread over 17,000 hectares.

This area is of enormous importance. Indeed, the combination of the continental and Mediterranean climate encourages biodiversity with exceptional fauna and flora. Of particular note are the wild orchids, the rich variety of carnivores among the mammals and of falcons among the birds, with rare and endangered species.

Besides the natural beauty of the area and the landscape, the crowning jewels are undoubtedly the artisan products, in particular those made from leather, the new museum housed in the splendid setting of the former Augustinian convent, the ruins of the Frangipane Castle and the historical centre, all worth a visit. An important business market is that of beef and pork processing, characterized by genuine, organic products. It is also famous for the typical Tolfa cuisine, winning awards in all the food and wine events.

The Torneo dei Butteri (Herdsmen’s Tournament) has been taking place in Tolfa since August 1282. It includes various events, with exhibitions and competitions for herdsmen from different regions. The calf-catching competition and the “merca” (marking of animals) are particularly riveting.
